Why the Stoos Ridge Hike Should Be on Every Switzerland Itinerary

If you’re searching for a hike in Switzerland that combines dramatic ridgelines, panoramic mountain views, and a peaceful alpine atmosphere, the Stoos Ridge Hike (Stoos Gratwanderung) absolutely delivers. During our stay in Lucerne, Switzerland, we took a day trip to the tiny mountain village of Stoos and it quickly became one of our favorite experiences of the entire trip.

Getting to Stoos from Lucerne

One of the best parts about this hike is how easy it is to reach from Lucerne. From the city, it’s about an hour via a combination of train and bus to the Stoos funicular, which is one of the steepest funiculars in the world. The ride itself feels like an attraction—smooth, fast, and offering amazing views as you climb straight up the mountainside.

Starting the Hike: Klingenstock to Fronalpstock

Most hikers walk Klingenstock → Fronalpstock, and that’s exactly what we did. After taking the chairlift up to Klingenstock, we were immediately met with 360° views of alpine peaks, shimmering lakes, and small Swiss villages below. The trail follows a narrow ridge for much of the journey, but it’s easily manageable if you take your time.

This hike is the definition of “every corner reveals a new postcard view.” The Swiss Alps stretch endlessly in every direction, and on a clear day you can see Lake Lucerne glowing below.

What to Expect on the Trail

  • Distance: ~4.5 miles / 7 km

  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • Trail Type: Point-to-point along the ridge

  • Best For: Anyone who loves panoramic views and a little adventure

There are a few steep sections and stairs, but it’s doable for most active travelers. The trail is well-maintained, and there are plenty of places to stop, take photos, and soak in the scenery.

Ending at Fronalpstock

At the end of the ridge, you’ll reach Fronalpstock, which offers even more incredible views—including a perfect vantage point over Lake Lucerne. We grabbed a quick snack at the mountaintop restaurant before riding the chairlift back down to the village of Stoos.

Why We Loved This Hike

Staying in Lucerne gave us the perfect combination of city charm and mountain adventure. The Stoos Ridge Hike felt like stepping into a Swiss postcard—dramatic cliffs, rolling green peaks, and peaceful trails that never felt overly crowded.

If you’re staying in Lucerne and want a bucket-list level hike without too much travel time, this should be at the top of your list.
